As a rule, it’s a good idea to inspect your gutters once over every 6-12 months. Left longer than this, you may increase the likelihood of blockages, bacteria growth, pest infestation and a whole host of other issues that will impact the lifespan of your gutters.

This is not advisable; it puts unnecessary strain on the gutters and could cause damage. It’s always best to use a ladder stabiliser or other support when working on or near gutters. If you must lean a ladder on gutters, be sure to distribute the weight evenly by placing the ladder feet on either side of the gutter and avoid leaning it too far to one side. This could cause the gutters to collapse.

There are several tell-tale signs you can look out for to indicate poor drainage. These include:

• The presence of puddles & mould around the outside of your home or office. 
• Seeing peeling paint or corroded wood, which can indicate a clog that’s causing an overflow of water to run down the back of gutter to the building’s exterior walls. 
• Hearing water pouring over the gutter sides & slapping the ground during rainfall. This may mean the gutters aren’t connected or there’s a blockage.
• Obvious rust spots in & around the gutter system. 
• Noticing that the gutters sag under the weight of water, or they’re pulling away from the fascia board.
